Tikanga Ririki Parenting Programme
A Strengths-based Māori Parenting Programme
Tikanga Ririki is the way of raising children that our tūpuna (ancestors) followed. They created a violence-free, happy and loving environment for tamariki. Our tūpuna did not hit children. The men were warriors, food producers and also gentle parents.
Māori parents have to go back to their past to move forward. We have to learn from our past and take the best of it into our lives now.
Children were the most important people in the community. They were tapu and therefore untouchable. All adults were committed to raising and guiding them without harsh treatment. They all knew that the strength of their future lay in investing in tamariki.
